Durston may be less than 10 years old, but its mark on the ultralight backpacking world is already impressive. One of the brand’s marquee offerings, the X-Mid 1, has become a thru-hiker favorite in recent years, in large part due to its compelling value proposition. Its $269 price is in line with many non-Dyneema single-person trekking pole tents, but none offer the same level of innovation. Its unique geometry diagonally orients the tent body within its rectangular fly, offering a generous 21.3 square feet of floor space, including a 33-inch width that can accommodate even the widest backpacking sleeping pads. The design also features dual doors and vestibules (rather than the single entry found on most 1-person shelters) and shifts the trekking poles toward opposite ends of the tent, making the doorways easier to use and creating a diagonal ridgeline that increases headroom.
A big way the X-Mid keeps its costs down is by using polyester fabrics rather than the lighter, more performance-driven (but significantly pricier) Dyneema. That said, don’t assume this shelter can’t take a beating. We’ve used the similarly-designed 2-person X-Mid 2 in less-than-ideal weather, where the 20-denier seam-taped build stayed stable and kept us dry, sagging less than comparable nylon tents. (Note: the most recent version uses a slightly thinner 15-denier high-tenacity silpoly.) In particularly rough conditions, the low-to-the-ground “storm pitch” adds even more protection. Plus, the X-Mid’s popularity among Triple Crown hikers suggests it’s built to handle months on the trail.
At 1 pound, 12.5 ounces all in and with a 12-inch by 5-inch packed size, it isn’t as light or small as the most stripped-down ultralight shelters. Backpackers chasing speed records or the lightest possible kit likely will want to go with something even more minimalist, like the 11.7-ounce Plex Solo or even a tarp. But those willing to carry the extra weight will benefit from an improved quality of life at camp. Its four pockets are the most we’ve seen on any trekking-pole tent, while its mostly mesh body, peak vents with hook-and-loop fasteners, and double-wall construction help keep condensation at bay. Just another reason why the X-Mid is a true bang-for-your-buck winner, and why it’s become an ultralight darling.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate Dyneema-based fabrics into backpacking gear, which quickly earned it a devoted following among ultralight enthusiasts. The fabric is at the core of the Unbound’s performance: This hybrid single-wall shelter is one of the lightest fully enclosed tents we’ve seen. Its mesh doors (attached to the fly) and bathtub floor offer more protection than floorless shelters, yet it weighs less than 1.5 pounds. The Unbound is also mostly capable of handling Mother Nature’s mercurial temper—to a point. When our tester pitched it high in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, it initially kept her dry during an hours-long downpour. However, once water pooled around the shelter, rain splashes entered the tent through the mesh gaps between the bathtub floor and fly. Still, the Dyneema material didn’t sag or stretch during the storm, and is strong enough for years of rough pitches.
Ease of setup can be hit or miss with trekking-pole tents, but we found pitching the Unbound a fairly straightforward task. Our tester even considered it a great introduction to this type of shelter—unlike her past experience with half-pyramid tarps, which required staking the tent out in a specific order, this shelter gave her the freedom to anchor down all the corners all at once. You also don’t need to set up the guylines yourself, as they come pre-attached at the bottom of each door. With a 48-inch peak height and 28 square feet of floor space, the Unbound should provide most campers enough room to sit up and move around a bit. And without the bulk of included poles, its 8-inch by 6 by 5.5-inch packed size makes it an appealing choice for tarp-averse ultralighters looking to pair a fully enclosed tent with a smaller pack.
Still, we’d be remiss not to point out the most glaring stain on the Unbound (and other Dyneema tents’) reputation—its hefty price tag. At $775, it will certainly take its toll on your bank account, but if you’re planning a months-long thru-hike, its cost-per-use ratio may make the investment more justifiable. Plus, Dyneema isn’t the only thing this shelter has going for it. The Unbound provides several places to store your gear—kind of a surprise at this weight—including hang loops, side mesh pockets, and fully enclosed vestibules. Single-wall tents also usually struggle with moisture buildup, but the Unbound has vents at the top of each vestibule to help circulate air, and our tester didn’t experience any condensation in humid, 60-degree conditions. Its hefty price tag will keep low-mileage backpackers at bay, but if you’re hiking marathons on the regular, it’s worth a serious look. As one of the OG brands in the ultralight space, Zpacks has over 20 years of experience making products for backpackers who like to hike fast and far. The classic Duplex trekking-pole tent is consistently a favorite among Triple Crown hikers, and with the Duplex Pro, Zpacks added several quality-of-life features with a minimal weight penalty—in fact, the Pro is the lightest shelter we’ve tested so far. You’ll find new zippers on the storm doors and an extra 1.1 square feet of floor space for just 1.9 ounces more. (Note: we tested its predecessor, the Duplex Zip, which has U-shaped doors.) We’re also fans of the two side pockets and 48-inch peak height. Because of the Duplex’s single-wall construction, you may wake up with a damp sleeping bag, though two peak vents, along with gaps between the bathtub floor and the short sidewalls, help promote airflow.
Even with those perks, the Duplex Pro’s main selling point is still its featherweight build. It checks in at 1 pound, 3.5 ounces, which is a key advantage when you’re putting in big miles or hiking for months on end. At the same time, it’s durable enough for everyday use, thanks to its Dyneema material. We can confirm that the Pro is bomber: One of our testers trekked the Continental Divide Trail with it, and its only battle scars are a small pinhole in the floor and a snag on a stake loop. Unfortunately, we’ve had other quality control issues. One Better Trail editor wasn’t stoked on the tent’s homemade feel, which was marred by loose threads—a step down from the clean construction of competitors like the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2. She also struggled to use the door tightener, even with plenty of trekking-pole-tent experience under her belt.
Like most trekking-pole shelters, the Duplex Pro is trickier to set up compared to freestanding or semi-freestanding models, but it’s also just plain finicky. Our CDT thru-hiker often needed to adjust the stakes and poles to get all the angles right. (Zpacks sells a Freestanding Flex Kit to use the Duplex Pro without stakes; 13.9 oz. aluminum poles cost $100, while 9.8 oz. carbon fiber poles cost $180.) Nail the pitch, though, and it’ll handle most weather you’re likely to encounter, even with its decently tall peak height and spacious interior. Plus, its waterproof walls won’t sag or stretch, which helped keep our tester dry during an intense thunderstorm in Glacier National Park—fellow hikers in silnylon shelters weren’t so fortunate. So, while we have some slight build-quality qualms, the Duplex Pro is a thru-hiker staple for good reason and a worthwhile buy for any serious ultralighter. Ultralight backpacking equipment gets expensive, fast, and tents are among the priciest products you can buy. As you’ve seen in the rest of this guide, some shelters cost as much as many people’s monthly rent. The Lanshan 2 Pro, though, considerably softens the financial blow. At less than $200, it’s by far the least expensive ultralight tent we’ve tested so far, but its price belies the Lanshan’s excellent durability. Our tester spent over 300 nights in this tent (true story), including trips across Peru, Bolivia, and New Zealand, without ripping or puncturing its 20-denier silnylon body or PU-coated nylon floor. The only damage it took was when a curious mouse chewed a small hole through the mesh.
Still, it’s no surprise that a tent this inexpensive has its flaws. The Lanshan’s single-wall design already makes condensation a concern, but its mostly solid doors limit ventilation even more. Vents at the peak and along the ends of the floor offer little airflow, and when our tester camped in particularly cold and humid weather on Peru’s Huayhuash Circuit, her camera was damaged after soaking in a puddle of water. (Note: The updated Lanshan includes panels at the head and foot that help prevent moisture from dripping onto your things, but which weren’t included on the older model we tested.) In mild to moderate wind and rain, though, this tent stayed upright and kept her dry.
Another concession to the Lanshan’s price is its 2-pound, 4.5-ounce weight, making it the heaviest single-wall tent we’ve reviewed so far. While that’s light enough for most regular backpackers, true minimalists might take issue. Even so, it packs down decently small (about the size of a 1-liter Nalgene) and comes with loads of livability. The Lanshan’s 29.7 square feet of floor space and 49.2-inch peak height gave our tester and her husband plenty of room to move around, and when backpacking solo, she could even practice yoga inside. With just one internal pocket and two vestibules, organization is limited, and you’ll have to seam-seal it yourself (or pay an extra $35 for 3F UL’s in-house service). It’s not often a freestanding tent enters the ultralight conversation, but the CrossPeak 2 is a bit of a unicorn. Weighing just 2 pounds, 2 ounces, it’s much lighter than the rest of the freestanding competition, and even undercuts some semi-freestanding tents. Like the rest of Hyperlite’s slate of ultralight shelters, Dyneema is the CrossPeak’s weight-saving secret ingredient, but it also comes with the advantages of a fully pole-supported structure. When stacked against the semi-freestanding Big Agnes Tiger Wall, the CrossPeak’s nearly vertical walls and 3-inch-taller peak height help make up for its lackluster 28.4 square feet of floor space. Even with its comparatively narrow head end, our testers had room to sit up, crouch, and comfortably carry out in-tent activities—including whipping out playing cards while hiding from swarms of mosquitoes. Plus, the CrossPeal sports small corner pockets and overhead clothesline loops to help organize your gear.
Thanks to its Dyneema fabrics and freestanding architecture, the CrossPeak is also both more functional and stormworthy than many ultralight competitors. You can pitch it on exposed granite, soft sand, or high-alpine snowfields, without the need for perfectly placed stakes or tensioned guylines. Our testers camped on an exposed ridgeline in Washington’s Central Cascades, where the shelter protected them from gusts of up to 45 mph without collapsing. Unfortunately, it did little to prevent dust from blowing under the vestibules and through the mesh doors, which, after interacting with the condensation on the canopy, turned into mud that required a post-trip deep clean. To help combat moisture buildup, there are vents by the ceiling and floor, and you can prop open the vestibule doors on calm nights for additional airflow, but these solutions only go so far given the CrossPeak’s single-wall construction.
Another minor complaint with the CrossPeak is its relatively large packed size. Not only is Dyneema bulkier than polyester or nylon (even though it’s lighter), but you’ll also need extra space to store the tent’s three poles. And then there’s the biggest elephant in the room—the $950 price tag. While it’s no surprise that performance-oriented ultralight gear can get expensive, at nearly a grand, the cost had us doing a double-take. Thru-hikers rambling along well-defined trails will be fine opting for lighter and cheaper shelters. But if your missions demand the stake-free flexibility and weather protection of a freestanding tent paired with the weight savings and performance of Dyneema, the CrossPeak could be a worthwhile investment. Just because you want to go ultralight doesn’t mean you need to resign yourself to fussing with a trekking pole tent. At 2.5 pounds, the Tiger Wall is still relatively lightweight and a whole lot easier to set up. The majority of its semi-freestanding structure comes from its single hubbed DAC Featherlite NFL pole, and both the pole hooks and fly connection buckles are straightforward to use; no wrestling with trekking pole length here (although it’s still not as quick a pitch as a freestanding shelter). You also won’t have to worry about gear storage while inside. There’s a large overhead pocket roomy enough to stuff your puffy into, plus hang loops and additional ceiling and side pockets for smaller items. And while its 18-inch by 5-inch packed size isn’t particularly compact for the category, the stuff sack’s lengthwise opening makes breaking camp less cumbersome than with a cinch-top bag.
Unfortunately, the Tiger Wall’s conveniences don’t really extend to its livable space. Though a ridgepole helps expand the headroom, its 39-inch peak height is still outclassed by many trekking-pole tents, which stand at 48 (or more) inches tall. Its 28-square-foot floor is fairly small, especially given its tapered foot end, and our tester complained of a lack of space when both she and her tentmate were shifting positions. That said, this tent has accompanied another Better Trail editor for years on solo treks and delivers a roomy setup for individual hikers who don’t mind hauling some extra weight in the name of simplifying their pitch, or if they prefer to not carry trekking poles.
Most non-Dyneema ultralight tents compromise durability for weight savings, and the Tiger Wall is no exception. It uses a proprietary HyperBead fabric—15-denier ripstop nylon that Big Agnes claims to be stronger, lighter, and more waterproof than traditional materials—on its rainfly and floor. We can attest that it’ll keep the rain out, but we’ve also ripped waterlogged door flaps that stuck to the zipper and punctured the base while camping on pebble-laden ground. Careful campsite selection and gentle handling are required for long-term use. Luckily, the frame is capable of withstanding wind without flattening, and condensation isn’t a concern thanks to the Tiger Wall’s double-wall design with an all-mesh canopy. We think a lighter, more durable trekking pole shelter makes more sense for a true ultralight setup, but if you like the ease of use and camp amenities of semi-freestanding tents, the Tiger Wall is a good compromise. The Haven has an interesting origin story. It was born from the combination of two former Six Moon products, the Haven Tarp and Haven NetTent, so versatility is one of its strong suits. You can pitch the fly and inner tent body separately, letting you customize your setup, whether you want a weight-saving tarp configuration or hope to enjoy some late-night stargazing. Its fly-first pitch also helps keep the inside of the tent dry if you’re setting up in wet weather. Actually pitching the shelter proved finicky, however, even by trekking-pole tent standards. Our tester, who’s spent hundreds of nights in trekking-pole tents, had trouble keeping the fly taut. Her husband had better luck, but still found that the Haven required more precise stake placement and tensioning than usual, which can be an issue on uneven, rocky, or root-filled terrain.
We also have mixed thoughts on the Haven’s build. Its silnylon fly and floor (20D and 30D, respectively) are decently thick and, while not as bombproof as Dyneema, don’t need to be babied as much as shelters with weaker fabrics. Still, our tester was less impressed with the stitching, which she felt was middling in quality. We’re similarly conflicted about its interior space: The 45-inch peak height is below average, and the 26.9-square-foot floor is the smallest in this guide, but the poles are offset toward the head of the tent for more room to sit up straight, and our tester never felt cramped with both her and her husband inside. There are also two small mesh pockets by the doors (a great place to keep your headlamp) and large vestibules for storing packs and shoes.
Thanks to the Haven’s double-wall architecture and peak vents, condensation isn’t a concern and the tent does a solid job protecting its occupants from rain and wind, too. In the Colorado Rockies, it kept us dry in a storm and handled moderate gusts without toppling over or sagging. That said, this tent comes with a weight penalty: At 2 pounds, 2 ounces, it’s not as light as many trekking-pole competitors, and that’s before seam sealing, which can add a couple of ounces. All in all, while the Haven has its share of bright spots, we hesitate to give it a full-throated endorsement, especially when there are better options in the same price range. That said, the best tent for you may not be the highest-scoring option overall. Your choice should reflect your specific ultralight priorities and objectives. For a sub-100-day thru-hike, it may make sense to prioritize a lighter, slightly smaller, and less livable shelter. On the other hand, high-alpine trips above treeline may call for a marginally heavier, freestanding tent that’s more capable in adverse weather. This being an ultralight gear category, weight and packed size are probably what most people are going to look at first when choosing a tent. These ratings are also pretty straightforward: The lighter and more compact a shelter is when packed, the higher it’ll score (factoring in, of course, the number of people it can fit). Also, instead of only reporting the minimum trail weight (just the tent body, rainfly, and any included poles), we also use the slightly heavier packaged weight (everything the tent comes with), which more accurately reflects what you’ll carry on the trail.
Typically, semi-freestanding and freestanding tents, along with double-wall trekking-pole shelters, weigh between 2 and 2.5 pounds. Single-wall trekking-pole shelters are even lighter, often around 1.5 pounds or less. (If you’re a solo backpacker looking to cut even more weight, some models, like the Zpacks Duplex Pro, are available in one-person versions.) This range is reserved for the lightest and most compact tents, typically weighing under 1.5 pounds. When people talk about ultralight, this is what they mean.

Tents at the upper end of what we’d consider ultralight, weighing 2.5 pounds or more. Most are double-wall, semi-freestanding shelters that are inherently bulkier due to the added materials and poles.
This category encompasses everything related to your experience inside the tent. First and foremost is interior space. We start by looking at floor dimensions, including both square footage and shape. Most ultralight tent floors hover around 28 square feet, though some, like the spacious Durston X-Mid 2, eclipse 30 square feet for a truly palace-like feel (for a minimalist shelter, that is). Conversely, some models, like the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2, taper at the foot end, which can save some weight but also make the inside feel cramped. Peak height and headroom also factor into our assessment. While trekking-pole shelters tend to offer taller ceilings, semi-freestanding and freestanding designs often have walls that are closer to vertical, creating more usable space for sitting up and moving around.
Beyond internal space, several additional factors influence a shelter’s livability. Gear loops, the number, placement, and size of interior pockets, and vestibule size and coverage all affect how organized and functional a shelter feels. We also consider ease of entry and exit, and, for trekking-pole tents, whether the poles are offset or positioned in the middle of the doorway, the latter of which can make ingress and egress a bit more annoying.
Tents with especially spacious interiors, which can easily accommodate two people. Expect around 30 square feet or more of floor space and generous headroom, along with multiple pockets, gear loops, and large vestibules.
Slightly smaller shelters, including ones with tapered floor plans, sloping walls, and ceilings that are lower, if still usable. Some storage options are available, but they’re limited.

If you’re caught in an unexpected storm or simply wiped after a long day on the trail, the last thing you want is a tent that requires a series of complex steps and precise measurements to pitch. While most ultralight tents have a more involved setup process than traditional backpacking shelters, that doesn’t mean you need to resign yourself to packing a protractor just to get the angles right.
Freestanding tents, like the Hyperlite Mountain Gear CrossPeak, almost always score highest here. No stakes are required (aside from the vestibules), as the poles provide the structure needed for the tent to stand on its own. Semi-freestanding shelters also perform well, while non-freestanding (trekking-pole) tents are the most complicated. That said, some trekking-pole designs are more forgiving than others. For example, you can properly erect the Hyperlite Unbound 2 regardless of the order in which you stake the corners, while other trekking-pole shelters demand more specific steps and fine-tuning after the initial pitch to achieve proper tension. We also might give a bonus to models that allow you to pitch the fly and body in multiple configurations.

When you’re in the backcountry, you’ll inevitably encounter inclement weather. To stay dry through a storm, it’s essential that your shelter can handle whatever Mother Nature throws at it. In our assessment of this important category, we start by looking at rain fly materials. Dyneema is inherently waterproof, making it the fabric of choice here, though silnylon and silpoly also do a solid job of keeping water out. (That said, polyester sags less than nylon, giving it a slight edge.) Tents that come pre-seam-sealed earn bonus points.
We also, of course, factor in our on-trail testing experience, including how well the tent kept out the elements and overall stability in windy, stormy conditions. Pole-supported tents are naturally better at withstanding strong gusts, though some trekking-pole shelters are surprisingly stout when pitched correctly. If you hike no matter the weather, and peace of mind during an intense backcountry gale is a priority, look for a tent that scores well in this category.
Full-coverage shelters capable of handling especially harsh three-season weather. Their sturdy structures and materials won’t sag, bend, or let moisture in, even during prolonged rain or windy conditions.
Tents that remain reliable in mild to moderate storms and provide decent—if not impeccable—rain coverage.

Ultralight tents occupy an interesting space when it comes to durability. It’s one of the areas most often sacrificed in the name of weight savings, yet these shelters typically see more abuse than traditional backpacking tents. Because of this, thoughtful site selection and careful handling are important, even for models that score well here.
All else being equal, a higher denier rating (which indicates fabric thickness) generally indicates a more capable fabric, though durability is a little more nuanced than that. Pound for pound, nylon is stronger than polyester. Dyneema, however, outclasses both—it’s both lighter and significantly more durable, and its denier might not indicate its strength. For maximum durability, look for tents built with Dyneema fabrics, though you’ll pay a premium for that advantage.

Our sustainability rating for ultralight backpacking tents takes into account nine different criteria. On the product level, we’re looking for recycled or Bluesign-approved materials, PFAS/PFC-free durable water-repellent finishes, and solution-dyed materials. On the brand level, our criteria include whether the company offers repair services, has a dedicated resale or recycling program, uses recycled or reduced packaging, monitors greenhouse gas emissions, and publishes an annual impact report. Ultralight backpacking tents with a high sustainability rating meet a number of these criteria, while those with a lower sustainability rating might meet none or just a few. We also consider the degree to which our criteria are met; for example, 10% recycled materials is not the same as 100% recycled materials. Note that not every sustainability effort by a brand or product fits neatly into our categories. In these circumstances, we may increase or decrease a rating based on these factors. Nylon
Nylon is the fabric of choice not just for many tents, but for all kinds of outdoor gear. It’s relatively inexpensive and has a better strength-to-weight ratio than its equally well-known alternative, polyester. Still, it’s not as water-resistant as the latter, and as a result, is often impregnated with silicone (creating a material known as silnylon) or coated with PU to offer better protection from the elements.
Even with those added treatments, a nylon rainfly’s seams are still vulnerable to water leakage, especially if you’re caught in a torrential downpour. To keep you and your gear dry, make sure your shelter is seam sealed. Most tent manufacturers will handle this step for you, though some cottage brands, like Six Moon Designs, require you to do it yourself (or charge an additional fee to handle it in-house).
Polyester
Polyester isn’t as strong as nylon, but it’s more water resistant and less prone to stretching when wet, which can save you from having to re-pitch a sagging shelter during a downpour. Like their nylon counterparts, some polyester tents, like the Durston X-Mid 2, also feature silicone-treated fabrics (silpoly) for added rain protection. Polyester is also more UV resistant than nylon and less prone to long-term degradation. Still, as with nylon, you’ll want to make sure it’s seam sealed unless you want water dripping inside your tent during a storm.
Dyneema
Dyneema has become a popular fabric in the ultralight community, and for good reason. Made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), it’s lighter, stronger, and much more waterproof than both nylon and polyester. (In fact, it claims to be about 15 times stronger than steel on a weight-for-weight basis.)
Most tents actually use Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF), which pairs laminates with Dyneema fibers; for simplification purposes, though, we generally just use the umbrella term “Dyneema” when talking about DCFs. Because the material is inherently waterproof, Dyneema shelters are usually single-walled, with the tent body pulling double duty as the rainfly. This means that they don’t handle interior condensation well—but also that they’re much lighter than their double-walled nylon and polyester counterparts. (For example, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2 weighs a mere 1 lb. 6 oz.)
Dyneema tents are also much (...much) more expensive than nylon and polyester models; the Unbound 2 goes for $775, and it’s not even the priciest shelter in the category. But if you’re a dedicated ultralighter looking for the best and lightest shelter available, and one that will hold up over time and during inclement weather, Dyneema is often worth the steep investment. On double-wall shelters—those that have separate material structures for the tent body and rainfly—the tent body (sometimes called a canopy) consists of the floor, walls, and ceiling within which you’ll actually sleep. Tent bodies are made to be breathable and light-filled rather than the waterproof, solid designs of rainflies, and so they’re usually constructed with a healthy amount of mesh on the walls and ceiling—the more mesh, the airier your tent will feel, and the less condensation will build up on cold or humid nights.
The tent body floor is the layer of waterproof fabric that separates you from the ground. Almost all ultralight tents with floors use a bathtub design, with the fabric extending a few inches up the walls to prevent moisture from sneaking inside. To shave weight, many tent floors are only 10- to 15-denier thick (the Six Moon Designs Haven has a burlier 30-denier floor), so you’ll need to take extra care to prevent rips, or bring along a footprint (an additional sheet of fabric placed under the floor) if you’re okay with the weight penalty.
If you want to go even lighter, a floorless tent like the Black Diamond Beta Light might be up your alley. A cross between a tarp and a traditional tent, these are good options for ultralighters looking to cut weight while still having walls on all sides. You’ll be much more exposed close to the ground, so campsite selection, along with protective additions like bug nets, will help keep you out of trouble from the elements and curious creatures. Most hikers who opt for a floorless tent still bring a groundsheet, like a panel of Tyvek or Polycryo, to give themselves a bit of protection from the dirt.
This feature’s design will vary depending on the shelter type. Double-wall tents, like the Durston X-Mid and the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL, pair the non-waterproof inner tent body with a waterproof outer rainfly to protect you from rough weather. These types of shelters are heavier than fly-only (single-wall) tents and can have a more involved setup—you need to make sure the body and fly are properly connected, and that both are pitched tautly—but are better at managing condensation. You also have the option of leaving the rainfly off on clear nights for some stargazing.
Single-wall shelters, like the Zpacks Duplex Pro, remove the separate tent body from the equation entirely and consist of a single layer of waterproof fabric to shield you from wind and precipitation. (You may still get mesh sidewalls and doors, meant to keep bugs at bay, attached to the fly, as on the Duplex Pro and the Hyperlite Unbound). Since they use fewer materials, these types of tents are the lightest models in the category.
The biggest downside of single-wall shelters is that they’re more prone to condensation buildup. Throughout the night, warm, humid air inside your tent (generated by your body heat and breath) meets the colder fly, causing water vapor to condense into small droplets on its inner surface. Unlike their double-wall counterparts, there’s no barrier between you and the moisture in a single-wall tent. Using your shelter's vents and propping open the fly can help increase airflow, while tents like the Duplex Pro have walls that extend past their bathtub floor, allowing the condensation to drip onto the ground outside.
Freestanding and semi-freestanding tents come with poles that form their shape by holding up the tent body and/or rainfly. The biggest difference between the two comes down to whether or not stakes are required: A freestanding tent can maintain its structure with just its poles, while a semi-freestanding shelter must be staked out at one end to fully maximize its living space and structural integrity.
Poles are typically made from strong yet lightweight materials like aluminum or carbon fiber and collapse down small to take up minimal space in or on your pack. The biggest advantage of having a freestanding or semi-freestanding tent is its flexibility. You can pitch pole-supported shelters on surfaces like rock, sand, or snow without much trouble, whereas non-freestanding tents will struggle if you can’t find purchase for a bunch of stakes. Still, these types of tents come with a weight penalty—it’s rare to find a shelter with poles under 2 pounds, while there are plenty of trekking-pole shelters that dip into the 1.5-pound range.
Non-freestanding tents rely on trekking poles for their structure, and their biggest advantage is weight savings. For example, Durston’s two-person trekking-pole tent, the X-Mid 2, is 13 ounces lighter than its freestanding equivalent, the X-Dome 2, which comes with poles. However, trekking-pole tents’ A-frame shape usually gives you less interior space (you can't achieve the same dome structure as with tent poles), and they’re more complicated to set up. While you can often pitch freestanding and semi-freestanding tents with just a few stakes, non-freestanding tents must be fully anchored down. Also, when a storm rolls in, pole-supported tents have the edge thanks to their natural rigidity and stability. While non-freestanding tents can still hold their own in rough weather, their structural integrity is much more reliant on proper staking and tensioning.
Most tents (aside from floorless models and tarps) will likely have vestibules, which are the parts of the rainfly that also act as doors. They create covered spaces between the tent body and the fly, and are great for storing anything you want to keep separate from the rest of your gear, like your backpack, dirty shoes, or wet layers. If the weather is nice, you can roll back and secure the vestibule doors with magnets or toggles for better ventilation and a clearer view of the stars. If a storm rolls in (or you just want extra privacy), you can zip them up completely.
To help keep your things organized inside your tent, many models include various forms of pockets on the interior of the tent body. You’ll often find pockets near the tent floor for quick access to small items like your phone, glasses, or headlamp, larger gear lofts positioned near the ceiling for larger things like a jacket or a sleeping bag liner, or overhead loops for hanging accessories like lights or gear you want to dry out. However, these perks also add to a shelter’s weight, which can be a dealbreaker for hikers looking to shave ounces wherever they can.
If you’re aiming for the lightest setup possible and willing to sacrifice some organization, a minimalist tent with fewer internal storage options will suit you better. However, if a place for everything sounds like what you want out of your shelter, something like the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL, which has compartments of varying sizes on its walls and ceiling, might fit the bill.
If you’ve ever woken up to a damp sleeping bag or wet gear, the culprit is likely condensation. It forms when the warm, moist air from your breath makes contact with the colder tent fabric and forms into water droplets. Increasing airflow naturally reduces moisture buildup, so many tents include vents near the peak, doors, or head. These openings usually use hook-and-loop fasteners attached to stiff rods that you can quickly pop open in dry weather or shut when a storm rolls in.
Double-wall tents like the Durston X-Mid tend to manage condensation better than single-wall models like the Hyperlite Unbound—the separate tent body provides a barrier from the moisture collecting on the fly. If you opt for a single-wall shelter, you’ll need to take steps to promote airflow and help minimize condensation, such as rolling back the fly and ensuring that vents are fully open.
Guylines attach to the fly and provide additional anchor points around the tent. While you might not need them in calm weather, staking them out during intense storms can help prevent your shelter from collapsing. Some tents, like the Hyperlite Unbound 2, come with guylines pre-attached, while others provide them separately and require manual installation. You might also find tensioners included, which makes the guylines easy to secure. However, it’s not uncommon for ultralight tents to omit these accoutrements to save a few ounces, so you’ll want to brush up on your knot-tying skills or purchase guylines separately.
Stakes are used to keep the tent taut and secure. They also help form the vestibule and are integral to maximizing your livable space. In the case of semi-freestanding and non-freestanding tents, they play a crucial role in the tent’s structure, providing the anchor points needed for your shelter to take shape. (The majority of freestanding tents’ structure comes from their pole architecture.)
Most ultralight tent stakes are made of aluminum, but you’ll also find titanium or carbon-fiber varieties. Before you head into the backcountry, double-check to make sure your tent actually comes with stakes. While some do, many UL models, like the Zpacks Duplex Pro, require you to buy them separately. Fortunately, there are plenty of third-party options, such as the MSR Groundhog Stakes, that are lightweight, sturdy, and hold well when they’re in the ground. Your tent’s stuff sack is a fabric bag with a cinchable top opening that gives you a compact place to store the shelter while it’s in or on your pack. Striking a middle ground between ease-of-use and stowability, a stuff sack should be just big enough for you to squish the body and fly, poles, and stakes inside. Still, the most dedicated ultralighters will take the organizational hit and leave their stuff sack at home. This not only saves some weight but also helps the tent fit more easily into the nooks and crannies of a packed bag, which is crucial for hikers with sub-40-liter ultralight packs.
While stuff sacks are convenient on the trail, storing your tent in them long-term can cause premature degradation. Keep your shelter in a dry environment and in a loose, breathable bag (a simple pillowcase works great) when at home, and it’ll last for years to come.
The appeal of an ultralight tent is real, but that doesn’t mean it makes sense for everyone. While lighter and less bulky when packed, ultralight shelters require more care and competency to use; they’re also usually more expensive. Because they’re typically built with thinner fabrics, these tents demand nuanced campsite selection and gentler handling overall. And if you opt for a trekking-pole ultralight tent, expect a learning curve when it comes to setup. Still, for hikers with ambitions of big outdoor missions where weight savings are key, such as tackling a long trail, the tradeoffs are often worth the weight savings.
Traditional backpacking tents, on the other hand, are heavier but much more plug-and-play. You can be less choosy when picking a campsite, and getting the right pitch is generally more straightforward. Depending on the model, they also offer more interior space and storage, making for a more comfortable experience inside the tent. If you mostly take weekend-length trips, you’ll likely appreciate the conveniences of a traditional shelter over an ultralight tent. (Some of them, like the 3-lb. Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2, aren’t even that heavy.)
The answer to this question depends largely on your backpacking goals and priorities. If you’re setting out on a months-long thru-hike or hoping to totally minimize your base weight in the name of speed, look for a sub-1.5-pound, single-wall trekking-pole tent, like the 1-pound, 3.6-ounce Zpacks Duplex Pro. You’ll need a baseline level of knowledge to select an appropriate campsite and correctly pitch this type of tent, but it offers significant weight savings.
On the other hand, if you mostly take shorter trips or simply don’t want the hassle of a trekking-pole tent, a heavier semi-freestanding shelter is a better choice. These tents sit squarely in the low- to mid-2-pound range, but are much more convenient to use. Ultimately, take some time to figure out your backpacking style, and go from there. Hikers who want the most convenience and space possible and don’t mind going a little slower or having a bulkier pack might even be happy with a freestanding model that weighs over 3 pounds.
Single-wall tents are a popular choice among ultralight backpackers who want an especially minimal and compact setup. With only one layer of fabric, these shelters shave off several ounces and pack down smaller compared to double-wall shelters, but they tend to struggle with ventilation, leading to increased condensation buildup. Thoughtful tent operation—such as leaving your vestibules open and propping open any vents—can help reduce your chances of waking up to wet gear.
Double-wall tents, which have a separate tent body and rainfly, are (predictably) heavier and bulkier, though most ultralight models, like the Durston X-Mid 2, will still weigh between 2 and 2.5 pounds. They also manage condensation more effectively: Because water vapor condenses on the inside of the fly, the tent body acts as a buffer to keep your stuff dry. If you don’t mind carrying the extra weight and appreciate the added moisture management, a double-wall tent will likely serve you better.
Some dedicated ultralighters will do just about anything to drop weight—cutting excess fabric from their packs, cold-soaking meals to avoid bringing a stove, and sleeping super-thin foam mats rather than heavier air pads. However, you may not want to compromise comfort in the name of shaving a few pounds from your base weight.
If you’re looking for an ultralight shelter that retains most of the perks of a traditional backpacking tent, take a look at the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2. It has two doors and vestibules for livability, but sports a semi-freestanding design that doesn’t require trekking poles, a mesh-heavy tent body, and thin fabrics to cut weight. While most comfort-forward backpacking tents range from 3 to 5 pounds, this one weighs in at a respectable 2 pounds, 8 ounces. Which, when you're spending days or months on the trail, can have a noticeable impact on your fatigue, recovery, and overall enjoyment. Picking a tent for your thru-hike is a big decision. You’re likely going to use it for at least 100 nights, so you’ll want something that’s up to the task. At the same time, you’ll have to haul it with you the entire way, so choosing a lighter option can help reduce soreness and the risk of injury. To cut weight, it makes the most sense to opt for a non-freestanding, trekking pole tent, unless you specifically want the conveniences of a shelter with dedicated poles.
Because most thru-hikes follow well-maintained, clearly marked trails, your choice of materials isn’t as critical. While a Dyneema-built shelter will almost always outlast one made from polyester or nylon, most tents should last the length of your hike as long as you choose decent campsites (apps like FarOut can help with that) and are mindful of your gear. The Durston X-Mid 2, Hyperlite Mountain Gear Unbound 2, and Zpacks Duplex Pro are all good choices for long trails.
There are a few main factors to consider when determining how much you should spend on an ultralight tent. Materials play a big role; in general, shelters built with Dyneema command a higher price tag than those using polyester or nylon, as they’re lighter, stronger, and more waterproof. The fabric itself also costs more to produce. Structure matters as well, and you’ll also pay more for freestanding and semi-freestanding tents than for non-freestanding designs that use the same type of material.
Most ultralight non-freestanding tents worth their salt start around $300 (the sub-$200 3F UL Lanshan is a notable exception). At this price point, you’ll exclusively find nylon or polyester fabrics. While weaker than Dyneema, they can still last thousands of miles with careful handling and smart campsite selection. If you want the perks of a Dyneema tent, expect to shell out much more—$799 in the case of the Duplex Pro.
Semi-freestanding and freestanding tents generally start around $500 but can quickly climb in price. On the cheaper end are semi-freestanding shelters with lighter-duty fabrics, like the nylon Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL ($500), while burlier options such as the freestanding, Dyneema-based Hyperlite Mountain Gear CrossPeak can set you back close to a grand.
