Sep 22, 2026The world of sustainability can be murky, but Better Trail is finally bringing clarity. We’ve exhaustively researched over 1,000 outdoor gear products, communicated with brands, and built a detailed, rigorous rating system to bring it all together. At the top are Better Trail Certified products, rated 4 out of 5 or higher, representing the cream of the crop in sustainability.
You have likely visited our Sustainability Index, which is the leading source of sustainability data in the outdoor industry. In that Index, over 1,000 products and 150 brands have been analyzed, and Better Trail Certified products are the most sustainable on the market relative to their peers, receiving a rating of 4 out of 5 or higher.
Here is how the process works: Our team of sustainability experts (real humans, all with degrees in fields related to sustainability) researches a product category (rain jackets, for example) and develops detailed criteria against which all products are evaluated. These are at both the product level (factors like recycled materials and PFAS-free finishes) and the brand level (responsible manufacturing, greenhouse gas tracking, etc.). For each category, we’ll often end up with around ten total sustainability criteria.
We then conduct extensive research, scouring product pages, brand websites, impact reports, and third-party certifications. When we have questions or need clarifications, we reach out to the brands directly. The final step is applying our proprietary ratings system to all our findings. Better Trail Certified products are rated 4 out of 5 or better and meet the vast majority of our sustainability criteria.
The bottom line: If you are looking to shop as sustainably as possible, Better Trail Certified is the standard in the outdoor industry.
We’ve made it easy for you. In the handy sortable table below, you can choose your desired activity and product category (we have close to 50 in the Index now and counting), and a complete list of the products we’ve analyzed for sustainability populates. You can see the overall sustainability rating, and the column to the right shows the Better Trail Certified badge, when applicable. Better Trail Certified badges also appear on all of our review pages for qualifying products.
Better Trail Certified products are the cream of the crop from a sustainability perspective, and just over 25%, or one in four, of the total products evaluated by Better Trail have received this distinction. The percentage varies by category—we have seen greater sustainability efforts in areas like jackets, while some hard goods are lagging behind. In the end, Better Trail Certified is a hard-earned distinction, and we want it to stay that way.
No. Our sustainability ratings are entirely independent. Brands can't pay for a higher rating, request removal from the database (yes, that's happened, and we politely declined), or influence our methodology. Our editorial independence is non-negotiable—the same way as across all of Better Trail's gear reviews. We analyze all products in a given category against the same sustainability criteria, and provide the most accurate information possible, whether it's favorable or unfavorable.
We value open lines of communication. For readers, please feel free to ask a question or request that we analyze a product or brand not currently in our Index. For brands, you can always reach us to provide additional information about your products or company, request a correction, or schedule a meeting. If your brand has Better Trail Certified products, we offer logo kits for use on your website, email newsletters, and social media. The best way to reach us is via email at sustainability@bettertrail.com.
Better Trail Certified is a distinction awarded to the highest-rated products in each category, but our work does not stop there—far from it. Our Sustainability Index currently has over 1,000 products and 150 brands analyzed and growing. By using the Index, you can see how brands are rated overall (an average of all of their products analyzed along with a full breakout for each), and see the entire gamut of products by activity and category.
It’s worth noting that our ratings are designed to be tough, and products that score in the 3s, for example, often have a number of positive sustainability traits. This Index also allows you to see which brands and products are underperforming, all for the sake of transparency.
