Sustainability
The Hoka Kaha 3 GTX ranks among our top-rated hiking boots for sustainability. Like other Hoka products, it features nubuck leather sourced from Leather Working Group (LWG) Gold-rated suppliers. The upper fabric is made with 71% recycled polyester, while the quarter, tongue, and lining mesh contain 100% recycled polyester. Additionally, both the durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment and waterproof membrane are PFAS free.
Hoka has made notable progress in brand-level sustainability. It uses over 98% recycled or certified materials in its packaging, and its parent company, Deckers Brands, tracks its carbon footprint and environmental impact, publishing detailed progress and goals in an annual impact report. However, Hoka does not offer a resale or recycling program for used shoes, nor does it participate in a responsible manufacturing accreditation program like Fair Trade. Despite these gaps, the Kaha 3 remains one of the most sustainable hiking boots we’ve reviewed.
Below we break down in detail all of the Kaha 3 GTX's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking boots and our review of the Hoka Kaha 3 GTX.
