Sustainability
REI Co-op’s Trailmade pants are an above-average choice for sustainability, meeting many of our criteria at both the product and brand levels. The Trailmade’s nylon fabric is Bluesign-approved, as are 70% of the materials used in REI products. However, unlike many hiking pants we tested, the Trailmade does not contain any recycled materials. On the upside, these pants’ durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment is PFAS free. Like all REI products, they are shipped in paper-based, recycled, or Forest Stewardship Council-certified packaging with minimal plastic.
REI is a Climate Neutral Certified brand, meaning it has taken significant steps to reduce emissions and offsets the rest by purchasing carbon credits. The company publishes a clear and detailed annual impact report with data outlining its carbon reduction efforts. While the Trailmade pants are not manufactured in a Fair Trade Certified factory, many REI products are. Lastly, REI does not offer repair services but provides a resale program called Re-Supply, through which you can sell your Trailmade pants when you're done with them. Overall, these pants are a solid choice for sustainability.
Below we break down in detail all of the Trailmade pant's sustainability attributes at the product and brand level, including links to in-depth articles on relevant topics. For more, see our guide to the best hiking pants and our review of the Trailmade pants.
